Play Dough and Finger Paint

Finger paint and play dough are pass the tests unfavourably. Some of them contain substances that are not only unnecessary, but also harmful. When you make your finger paint and play dough by yourself, you can choose the ingredients.

Finger paints, cold mixed

Mix 100ml water with four to five spoons of flour, add food colouring or home-made plant paint. Fill the paint in screw-top jars and put it in the fridge. The paints are durable for about 2 weeks.

Cooked finger paints

The base for the paints is a mixture made of wallpaper paste and water (1-2 spoons wallpaper paste and 200ml water). Then you add the colour to this mixture (attention: use more wallpaper paste or less water if the colours are very liquid) and boil it. Fill the cooled paints in screw-top jars and put it in the fridge. They are durable for a few weeks.

Sand play dough

Mix two cups fine sand (e.g. bird sand) with one cup starch. Then add one cup water. Heat the mixture until it thickens.

For colouring use home-made soil and plant colours or food colouring.

Flour play dough

Mix 400g flour with 130 g salt and 2 spoons (40g) citric acid. Mix 400 ml boiling water with 4-6 spoons oil (the more oil, the softer the play dough) and slowly add it to the flour-salt-citric acid mixture.

Now you can separate the dough in different sized portions and colour it with the soil and plant colours or food colouring. The dough is durable for 6 month when packed hermetic.

Clay is a good alternative to play dough. You can make it wet to rebuild or bake it to keep it.
