Green Footprints for the Climate Conference in Glasgow

As in 2020 it was long not yet certain if we will be able to successfully complete our joint journey to the UN Climate Conference in 2021. But that did not mean that collecting Green Footprints had been affected as getting involved in climate protection is more necessary than ever - also in times of Corona! As the experiences from 2020 allready showed, the children and their institutions are very keen to participate and therefore put up with postponements and other problems - a big thanks to all being involved!

Despite these very special circumstances, also in 2021 180.989 children from nine different countries were collecting Green Footprints, Green Footprints, πράσινες πατούσες, Klimameilen, Groene Voetstappen, Gréng Meilen, Miglia Verdi, Zöld Mérföldet, Klimaschritte, Grön Footprints,  etc. and thus made their contribution to climate protection - and we are very pleased about that!

Climate Alliance brought the Green Footprints from 2020 together with all the new ones from 2021 to the UN climate summit in Glasgow and thus called on the politicians to act on climate issues even more purposefully and jointly as they were doing due to the Corona pandemic.

To get a quick overview on the Kids Climate Actions durig the two years of the pandemic please have a look at the ZOOM Report 2020/21.

There you find quite some pictures and short reports in English and the mother tongue of the participating country that shows what the ZOOM-Kids have undertaken to demonstrate their strong will on saving our World's Climate.

In addition, we have compiled some of the statements and wishes of the children.

Also have a look at our press release on the ZOOM handover at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.

Thomas Brose, Climate Alliance, presenting the total of Green Footprints to Patricia Espinosa, UNFCCC

Once again the circumstances for handing over the children's Green Footprints were special. Due to the pandemic we couldn't bring the little participants to present their results themselves. Therefore, at COP 26 in Glasgow, national and local coordinators of the campaign together with youth delegates stepped in and presented the overall results from 2020 and 2021 to the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, Patricia Espinosa.

Thomas Brose, Executive Director of Climate Alliance, emphasized that the commitment of the children, their families and teachers had been very challenging: many climate activity weeks had to be rescheduled or even cancelled. But this couldn't stop them from acting for our climate in the long term. With extra activities and creative solutions they found their way to collect Green Footprints.

Patricia Espinosa underlined that she is extremely grateful for the children’s contributions and that she will bring their messages to the attention of the leaders at COP 26. She also asked the children to continue their efforts and to not give up.

Climate Alliance now calls on those leaders to take the small and large Green Footprints collectors as role models: They have to develop new paths and special actions to save our future NOW!

This year Brose was supported by Birgit Engel and Csaba Lajtmann, national coordinators of Climate Alliance Luxemburg and Hungary, Janine Müller from the City of Haan and UN Youth Delegates from Austria, Hungary, Luxemburg and the Netherlands. Also Miguel Guimaraes Vasquez, President of FECONAU and Helmut Hojesky, head of the Austrian Delegation, were there (again), to point up the children’s commitment - many thanks to all supporters!

Together in 2020/21 more than 5 million - what an amount!

Shortly after handing over the Green Footprints to the head of the UNFCCC, we were also able to share the campaign results with Carole Dieschbourg, Minister of Environment of Luxembourg, as well as with Leonore Gewessler, Minister of Climate Protection and Environment in Austria. Here again, we got great support by the UN Youth Delegates.
