Once again this year, Bredenbek Elementary School deliberately chose not to use collection booklets or sticker sheets during the fundraising weeks in order to focus on sustainable climate protection.
This year’s theme for the 4th-grade classes was particularly interesting: “fast fashion”!
In total, the 94 children in 4 classes collected 1,495 miles—even more than last year.
They sent their demands for climate policy to Antalya on handmade “wish feet” and T-shirts.
The Evangelical Lutheran daycare centers in the Timmendorfer Strand and Niendorf communities also worked hard to collect items this year—and this was their very first time participating! As part of European Mobility Week, the children were out and about as “Little Climate Protectors” and thought about how they get to daycare, how far their commutes are, and what else they can do for the climate in their daily lives. They recorded their ideas on a “Climate Savers Wall.”
And what do the Little Climate Protectors actually want from policymakers? They expressed this in a very special way.
The children walked across a large poster with painted feet; in Niendorf/Ostsee, cardboard feet were decorated and inscribed with wishes such as “More trees instead of concrete!” Nils Hopp, first deputy mayor, personally presented the children with their certificates of participation on September 29.
In total, they racked up an impressive 1,293 miles! The Evangelical Lutheran daycare center in Timmendorfer Strand collected 414 mobility miles, 59 miles for climate-friendly food, and 20 energy-saving miles—a total of 493 miles. The Evangelical Lutheran daycare center in Niendorf/Ostsee racked up 350 mobility miles, 250 miles for climate-friendly meals, and 200 energy-saving miles—a total of an incredible 800 miles.
A huge thank you to both daycare centers and the community of Timmendorfer Strand! We look forward to seeing you next year!
