Austria
Even in this anniversary year, young climate advocates in Austria are hard at work, diligently collecting their climate miles.
As per tradition, the best result of the first half of the year was awarded the title of summer champion. Pergkirchen Elementary School in Upper Austria achieved the best results in the first half of the year! Within a week, the students collected 1,134 climate miles. During the week of April 24th to 30th, 2023, all 81 students of Pergkirchen Elementary School, along with the teachers, walked to school. Parents also joined the initiative, walking to school with their children.
Every day, the children, teachers, and parents met at four designated stops. A detailed plan was made in advance, ensuring a balanced distribution of companions and a unified schedule, allowing all students to walk to and from school together. The children covered a distance of about 2 km each way every day, totaling 1,415 km. Additionally, 111 km were walked by the teachers, 42 km by the accompanying parents, and 915 km for various leisure activities.
Furthermore, the topic of climate protection was incorporated into many subjects. At the end of the project week, the children created a poster showcasing their accumulated climate miles.
